Buying a used car in Odisha? Here's what the transfer costs.

When you buy a used car, ownership transfer (RC transfer) at the Odisha RTO is mandatory. Here's what to expect in terms of cost, documents and timeline — so there are no surprises after you pay.

1. What is RC transfer?

RC (Registration Certificate) transfer is the legal process of changing a vehicle's registered owner at the Regional Transport Office. In Odisha it must be completed within 30 days of the sale date. Until it's transferred, the previous owner remains legally responsible for the vehicle.

6. Important notes

  • RC transfer must be completed within 30 days of sale. Late transfer attracts a penalty.
  • Until the RC is in your name, the seller is legally liable for any traffic offences or accidents.
  • If the car has an active bank loan, the seller must obtain an NOC before the RC can be transferred to you.
